About this Map
Stormy Lake has a wonderfully irregular form, with two broad basins joined around a prominent central point and an underwater landscape far more complex than its shoreline alone suggests. Carefully drawn bathymetric contours reveal steep drop-offs, deep holes reaching more than 60 feet, submerged humps, shelves, and sharply changing depths along portions of the shoreline. The artful rendering of forests, wetlands, roads, and individual buildings complements the bathymetry and captures the quiet Northwoods setting surrounding this 523-acre Vilas County lake.
The surrounding landscape reinforces Stormy Lake’s secluded character. Stormy Lake Landing and its boat ramp provide public access near the lake’s central narrows, while Haven Shores occupies part of the northern shoreline. Nearby Nudist Lake and Pond Lake, together with the extensive wetlands and forest surrounding Stormy Lake, show how closely the lake is embedded within the larger Northwoods landscape. The relatively light shoreline development, particularly along portions of the southern basin, gives the map a striking transition from lake homes and roads into broad areas of woods and wetlands.
