About this Map
This carefully drawn, artful map of Shawano Lake captures both the impressive scale of the lake and the remarkable variety of its underwater and surrounding landscape. At approximately 6,215 acres, Shawano Lake stretches broadly from the City of Shawano eastward toward Cecil, with a long, developed shoreline enclosing numerous bays, points, shallow shelves, and offshore features. Detailed bathymetric contours reveal an especially complex lake bottom, including broad shallow areas, submerged ridges and humps, deeper troughs, and a striking concentration of holes and steep underwater breaks across the eastern half of the lake. Depths approach 40 feet, while the more widely spaced contours elsewhere illustrate the extensive shallower waters that characterize much of this large lake.
The map also captures the unusually strong relationship between Shawano Lake and the communities that surround it. The City of Shawano appears at the southwestern end of the lake, including its street network, airport, parks, and developed waterfront, while the Village of Cecil occupies the eastern end. Between them, numerous shoreline neighborhoods, resorts, marinas, boat ramps, parks, and recreational properties trace nearly the entire perimeter of the lake. Shawano Lake County Park is prominently shown along the northern shore, while additional public access points are scattered around the lake.
Beyond the immediate shoreline, the map provides a broad view of the surrounding lake country. Loon Lake and Washington Lake lie just north of Shawano Lake, accompanied by several smaller lakes, ponds, streams, and extensive wetland corridors. The Mountain-Bay State Trail crosses the landscape south of the lake and continues through the Shawano area, while State Highway 22 and State Highway 29 help place the lake within the larger regional transportation network. Together, these details make the map not only a portrait of Shawano Lake itself, but of the extensive recreational, residential, and natural landscape that has developed around one of the defining lakes of the Shawano area.
