Rock Lake

About this Map

Whenever I look at this map, I think, YES, the colors and rich landscape really look great on this one! This is another of my personal favorites in the WisCartography collection. I love the way the buildings and streets of the adjacent City of Lake Mills mesh with the softer colors and textures of the surrounding landscape, while the deep blue of Rock Lake anchors the entire composition. There is a tremendous amount of detail here, but to my eye it all comes together into a map that feels both intricate and balanced.

Rock Lake itself is a big part of what makes the map so visually interesting. Its long shape creates a strong centerpiece, while the depth contours reveal a surprisingly complex underwater landscape of deep basins, steep drop-offs, points, and shallower areas. Around the shoreline, the fine detail of individual buildings and streets gradually gives way to parks, wetlands, smaller lakes, and open countryside. I especially like that transition between the built and natural landscapes.

This map is available in two distinctly different compositions. The portrait-oriented version focuses more closely on Rock Lake and its immediate surroundings, allowing the lake and its bathymetry to dominate the artwork. The landscape-oriented version pulls back to include the entire City of Lake Mills along with Rock Lake, creating a broader portrait of the lake and the community beside it. I really like both versions for different reasons: one celebrates the lake itself, while the other shows how closely Rock Lake and Lake Mills are woven together.
