About this Map
Lost Lake is a broad Northwoods lake whose sweeping shoreline surrounds a largely open central basin, punctuated by several smaller underwater rises and depressions. Carefully drawn bathymetric contours reveal these subtle changes in depth as well as the steeper transitions near portions of the shoreline. The artful rendering extends beyond the water to include individual buildings, roads, forests, wetlands, streams, and shoreline development, giving the map the character of both a lake chart and a detailed portrait of the surrounding Vilas County landscape.
The map also captures several features that help define Lost Lake’s setting. Lost Creek exits the southwestern end of the lake through an extensive wetland corridor, while additional wetlands border much of the eastern and southern shoreline. Boat ramps provide access from opposite sides of the lake, and the surrounding roads, including Lost Lake Drive and nearby State Highway 155, show how homes and small neighborhoods have developed around an otherwise heavily wooded landscape. The result nicely illustrates the transition from settled lakeshore to the expansive forests and wetlands of the Northwoods.
