About this Map
This map of Long Lake captures the lake’s distinctive long, narrow shape and its beautiful setting along the Kettle Moraine in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties. Detailed bathymetric contours reveal the deep central basin, steep underwater slopes, and shallower areas along the shoreline. But while the lake itself is interesting enough to look at all by itself, I also spent quite a bit of time mapping the surrounding landscape.
Along the lake you’ll find the Long Lake Recreation Area, part of the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The map includes its campground, beaches, boat access, roads, trails, and other nearby features. I also included the Summit Trail climbing Dundee Mountain, which is an interesting landform in its own right.
Dundee Mountain is actually a moulin kame, a glacial landform left behind by the ice sheet that shaped this entire area. In fact, the landscape within just a mile or so of Long Lake contains what many geologists consider textbook examples of glacial topography. Kames, eskers, moraines, outwash channels, and, of course, the kettle lakes for which the Kettle Moraine is named can all be found in the surrounding countryside. For anyone interested in geology and geography, there is a remarkable amount packed into a relatively small area.
At the southern end of the lake is the small community of Dundee, which I also wanted to include as part of the map rather than stopping at the shoreline. Several familiar local destinations are shown, including the Hamburger Haus, Camp Dundee Bar & Grill, 3 Sweets Bakery & Cafe, and Dundee’s Roadhouse.
The standard print size for this map is 8" x 16", a format that works especially well with Long Lake’s elongated shape. I think the surrounding detail is an important part of what makes this map interesting. Long Lake is certainly the centerpiece, but the campgrounds, trails, Dundee Mountain, the community of Dundee, and all those glacial landforms help tell the larger story of this scenic corner of Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine.
