Lake Koshkonong

About this Map

This map of Lake Koshkonong is another of my personal favorites in the WisCartography collection. I especially love the composition of this one. The broad expanse of the lake dominates the center of the map, while the surrounding roads, communities, wetlands, streams, and smaller lakes create an intricate landscape around it. The fish illustrations fit naturally into the lower-right corner, giving that part of the map some added visual interest while helping balance the large mass of blue across the center.

I also really like the colors and textures in this map. The strong blue of Lake Koshkonong contrasts beautifully with the softer greens and earth tones of the surrounding countryside. Some of my favorite areas are along the northern and eastern shores, where the shoreline breaks apart into marshes, backwaters, islands, and winding waterways. Those details give the landscape a wonderfully organic quality and make this a map that rewards a closer look.

Lake Koshkonong itself has an interesting shape, with broad open water narrowing toward the Rock River at its southern end and several distinctive bays and points around its shoreline. Unlike a deep lake where tightly packed depth contours can dominate the bathymetry, Koshkonong's relatively shallow basin produces a much subtler underwater pattern. I like the way those delicate depth contours sit quietly within the broad blue lake while the complexity of the surrounding landscape carries much of the visual detail. For me, this is another map where the geography, colors, and overall composition came together particularly well.
