About this Map
Grindstone Lake is a large, deep lake with an impressive underwater landscape of steep breaks, submerged points, humps, and broad deep-water basins. Carefully drawn bathymetric contours reveal depths reaching about 60 feet and show especially dramatic changes along portions of the western and southern shorelines. The artful cartography combines this detailed bathymetry with forests, wetlands, roads, buildings, and shoreline development, capturing both the scale of the 3,176-acre lake and the wooded character of its Sawyer County setting.
The surrounding landmarks add considerably to the map. The community of Northwoods Beach occupies the prominent southeastern peninsula, with Little Grindstone Lake tucked immediately beside it and Lac Courte Oreilles appearing just beyond the southern edge. To the northeast, Grindstone Creek winds through wetlands near Lower Grindstone Spring, while the map also identifies the nearby lands of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. Trails, public boat ramps, shoreline neighborhoods, and numerous small lakes scattered through the surrounding forest complete the picture of Grindstone Lake as part of a much larger and richly interconnected northern Wisconsin lake landscape.
