About this Map

Red Cedar Lake forms the centerpiece of an impressive north-south chain of lakes extending from Balsam Lake through Red Cedar and south into Hemlock Lake. Carefully drawn bathymetric contours reveal Red Cedar Lake’s complex underwater terrain, including numerous holes, points, shelves, and changing depths, while the narrower connecting waters and neighboring lakes illustrate how the entire system fits together. The artful cartography combines this lake detail with forests, wetlands, roads, individual buildings, and shoreline communities to capture the character of this extensive lake country.

The surrounding geography is especially interesting. The community of Birchwood appears at the northern end of the map near the waters connecting toward Balsam Lake, while Mikana lies along Red Cedar Lake’s western shore. Islands, county parks, boat landings, and extensive shoreline neighborhoods surround Red Cedar Lake, contrasting with the broad wetlands and relatively undeveloped forest visible farther east and west. At the southern end, the chain narrows through a maze of small islands and channels before opening into Hemlock Lake, with Hemlock Creek continuing east toward Beyer Flowage, giving the map a wonderful sense of an interconnected Northwoods watershed rather than three isolated lakes.
